Knotty Alder: Why it’s Become One of ETO Doors Most Popular Woods

Alnus rubra, or “knotty alder” as we call it, is a low-strength wood that has some very obvious physical chartacteristics taken right out of a rustic log cabin. The wood can seem textured, especially if the grain pattern is very apparent. Knotty alder doors are gaining in popularity because they offer something different. Home owners who want to move away from the traditional woods, like Douglas Fir, often find knotty alder pairs very well with cherry wood. Here are some design tips, and advice, on ordering knotty alder.

What Makes Knotty Alder Unique

You know knotty alder doors when you see them because of the pronounced grain pattern on the face of the door. You should see large burls, or clusters of knots, arranged within a straight-grain pattern. We ship all of our doors unfinished, so what arrives is a beautiful piece ready for staining. You’ll notice the natural color is borderline yellow or reddish brown, so choose stains that will compliment that color. You may also want to apply a weather finish, especially if you experience heavy rains throughout the year.

Finding the Value

Why break from tradition? There are a few reasons why home owners are choosing uniquely colored and styled woods. For one, the home has stunning curb appeal when your door is both unique and matching your home’s aesthetic. Knotty alder interior doors also offer better insulation for the home with our solid core construction techniques.
