Staining and Finishing Your Exterior Doors

The last step before your modern exterior doors are installed might be the most important: staining and finishing. You want to make sure that your doors are protected and look great even under harsh environmental conditions. Doing a proper job of staining and finishing your exterior doors will help them maintain their beauty and durability for decades to come.

Staining and finishing modern front doors can be a simple process if you do it correctly. Here are a few steps you’ll need to take to do the job right:

Base Coat: The first coat that you apply should be the stain and sealer. This will provide the core protection to your door along with adding color. You can choose from many different types of colors to add depth or beauty to your door. However, you’ll need to make sure that you are using a stain and sealer with an alkyd-resin base if you have wood doors; lacquer-based finish can cause significant damage to your door.

Additional Coats: After applying the base coat, you’ll want to add one or two additional layers of sealant. This is a clear finish that is either solvent-borne or water-borne. Solvent-borne finishes -- such as oil-based finishes -- dry quickly and are very water resistant but will degrade quicker with exposure to sunlight. Water-borne finishes such as latex are very durable but may not fully cure for several weeks after the initial application. They also cannot be applied if the temperature dips below 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
